Social Media Sites

Social media -- tools that allow the sharing of information and creation of communities through online networks of people. Some examples of social media sites are Twitter, Facebook, Skype, Vimeo, YouTube, Flickr, Edmodo, Digg, and StumbleUpon.

Assignment:
  1. Write a reflection and include your thoughts on using Social Media in the classroom. Is there an appropriate and purposeful way to use social media in schools?

  1. Whew - reflection. I love to contemplate the future classroom. But sometimes I get to the end of class and my brain is just exploding. I feel like I'm running in front of a train that's increasing speed every time I come to class.
I'd heard about tweeting, so it was good to see it used. I also am interested in Twhistory. We're studying Midas right now, and I think the kids would have fun tweeting using that as a subject. Time is my only enemy. I have so much curriculum that has to be covered (and is scripted), I'm struggling to find the time to use this good stuff in my scope and sequence.

  2. I think I would like to definitely use twhistory for background information, and twitter conversations for characters in literature. I am intrigued with creating a youtube channel for just the pre-AP classes to make presentations and have them comment on each other's videos.

I am actually amazed at what I would be willing to do with the social media presented. I have such a negative view of Facebook, etc. from the bullying issues and the time my own kids waste on it, that I think of it as electronic cocaine. But the twitter seems to have tremendous possibilities. I might even let a class do book reports by tweet, as an experiment.
